The NSW Government is transforming the Westmead Health Precinct with the $1 billion Westmead Redevelopment and the $2.4 billion Parramatta Light Rail project from Westmead to Carlingford.

The Hawkesbury Road Widening Project was a key part of the development of both these projects.
Struber was engaged to develop and implement communications and engagement on site for the 15-month project duration, and design construction collateral.

Struber worked with closely with Transport for NSW, NSW Health and PWC to keep stakeholder and community, both business and residents, informed about HRW work and ensure that project information was communicated in an effective and timely manner.

This involved establishing the protocols for managing construction impacts, developing working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and managing complaints.

tactics

As the work was in a highly urban, residential environment, Struber regularly spoke in person with Health representatives, residents and affected businesses to address any concerns.

Our approach to consulting with the community included extensive door knocking, distribution of notifications and face-to-face surveys with 499 residents and businesses within 150 metres.

Struber also met fortnightly with representatives from the Westmead Hospital, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Westmead Medical Research Institute and Children’s Medical Research Institute to coordinate construction impacts with key hospital activities.

results

• 23 notifications were delivered from April 2019 to June 2020 to more than a 1000 residents and businesses on each occasion.

• Spoke with 10% of impacted residents and businesses via face-to-face surveys every three months so preferences and issues could be considered in programming the work.

• Following a review of stakeholder comments, night works were included to align with stakeholder preferences and minimise impacts on the community, hospital emergency departments and traffic.

• Only 15 complaints were received across 15-months of construction – an exceptional outcome with the close proximity of residents and businesses.
